FiTI celebrates fisheries transparency at 3rd Danny Faure Foundation Ocean Fair

The Fisheries Transparency Initiative (FiTI) participated in the 3rd annual Ocean Fair, organised by the Danny Faure Foundation and held on 6–7 June 2025 at Camion Hall in Victoria, Seychelles. This vibrant two-day event, organised to commemorate the United Nations World Ocean Day, brought together key actors in Seychelles‘ ocean conservation space under the theme “A Sustainable Ocean”. For the FiTI, this was an important platform to engage the public on why transparency and access to fisheries management information are vital for a sustainable and inclusive blue future.
The Ocean Fair has quickly become a landmark event in Seychelles’ environmental calendar – uniting conservation NGOs, research institutes, government agencies, artists and youth-led initiatives. This year, the fair featured over 15 exhibitors including the Seychelles Islands Foundation, Marine Conservation Society of Seychelles, Save Our Seas Foundation, Seychelles Fisheries Authority, WiseOceans and Ocean Labs, among others. Each organisation showcased their unique contributions to ocean stewardship through creative displays, hands-on activities, and engaging storytelling.
The FiTI’s booth offered an interactive experience for visitors to explore the importance of transparent governance in marine fisheries. The “Fisheries Transparency Quiz” tested visitors’ knowledge on Seychelles’ fisheries sector, the FiTI’s 12 transparency requirements and key findings from Seychelles’ latest FiTI Report. Participants of all ages – including schoolchildren and young professionals – enjoyed the quiz, sparking discussions on how transparency can help protect marine resources and empower local communities. We also featured a board game called ‘Seaweeds and Whirlpools’, inspired by Snakes and Ladders, which provided a fun and educational way for visitors to learn about the complexities of fisheries governance and the impact of transparency in real-life scenarios.
Throughout the Fair, the FiTI introduced the concept of public access to fisheries information, and highlighted how Seychelles – the first country to become compliant with the FiTI Standard – is setting an example globally. Visitors learned how transparency fosters accountability, ensures inclusive decision-making and strengthens trust between citizens, the government and the fishing sector.
The Danny Faure Foundation’s continued commitment to celebrating ocean action and connecting the community with the ocean’s wonders and challenges is deeply appreciated. Events like these reinforce the need for strong partnerships and shared responsibility to protect the marine environment.
FiTI extends its heartfelt thanks to the organisers, partners and everyone who visited the stand. We look forward to continuing our engagement with Seychellois citizens and supporting other countries in the region on their journey toward transparent and sustainable fisheries.
