Madagascar National MSG prepares new FiTI Report
ANTANANARIVO, September 8, 2024. The Fisheries Transparency Initiative (FiTI) International Secretariat conducted a country mission to Madagascar to assess the nation’s progress implementing the FiTI Standard ahead of the National Multi-Stakeholder Group’s (MSG) second FiTI Report.
Represented by FiTI Regional Coordinator for Western Indian Ocean, Mr Yannick Memee, the International Secretariat worked with Dr. Jude Bijoux, FiTI Report Compiler for Madagascar, to gain deeper insights into the country’s fisheries sector. The team engaged with the Ministry of Fisheries and Blue Economy to identify remaining gaps in fisheries management information and improve the publication of this information.
Mr Memee and Dr Bijoux met with key stakeholders from the Ministry, National MSG and the Mihari Network to gather vital information and clarify data relevant to the second FiTI Report. The discussions centered around the 12 Transparency Requirements of the FiTI Standard. These requirements provide the framework for assessing transparency in fisheries management.
Stakeholders were open and receptive to feedback during the discussions, contributing essential documents and committing to providing additional requested information. The group also explored ways to enhance the accessibility and comprehensiveness of information shared by the Ministry. They also identify options to close gaps in existing data.
Mr Memee also met with the Minister of Fisheries and Blue Economy, Dr. Paubert Tsimanaoraty Mahatante, to provide an update on the purpose of the mission. Mr Memee presented the FiTI Standard and FiTI’s methodology to Minister Mahatante, who expressed strong support for FiTI’s work. Furthermore, the Minister agreed to encourage further action within the Ministry, and ensure that implementing the FiTI remains a Ministry priority.
Madagascar’s second FiTI Report – covering publicly available marine fisheries management information for calendar year 2023 – is expected December 2024. The FiTI International Secretariat will continue to engage and support the National MSG through the report process, and as they work to implement the FiTI Standard in Madagascar.
