FiTI strengthens fisheries transparency, governance process in Chile
The FiTI International Secretariat, represented by FiTI Regional Coordinator for South America, José Vélez Tacuri, recently conducted a mission to Chile to strengthen the national FiTI implementation process and promote coordination among strategic actors linked to fisheries transparency and governance.
The mission included strategic meetings with public institutions, academia, and civil society organizations, including the Undersecretariat of Fisheries and Aquaculture (SUBPESCA), the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Service (SERNAPESCA), the Commission for Public Integrity and Transparency (CIPT), OCEANA Chile, WWF Chile, and the Pontifical Catholic University of Valparaíso (PUCV).
During the meetings, participants reviewed the current status of the FiTI in Chile, the progress and challenges of Commitment 10 of the Sixth Open Government Action Plan, and the priority actions needed to strengthen the national process. Among the main topics discussed were the establishment of the National Multi-Stakeholder Group (MSG), the strengthening of sectoral outreach processes, and the need to broaden the participation of key fisheries sector actors.
The mission also strengthened institutional relationships, opened spaces for collaboration, and positioned the FiTI as a practical tool to promote greater access to information, transparency, and participation in fisheries governance.
The FiTI will continue to provide technical assistance and support to establish the necessary conditions to advance Chile to FiTI Implementing Country status. This work supports a more coordinated, participatory process aligned with Open Government principles.
