FiTI attends launch of anti-corruption HUB in Uruguay

The Fisheries Transparency Initiative (FiTI) International Secretariat recently attended the launch of the Alliance for Integrity’s new National HUB in Montevideo, Uruguay ahead of International Anti-Corruption Day. Hosted by the local UN Global Compact Network, the HUB supports collaboration with the Alliance for Integrity on the Network’s 10th principle, anti-corruption.

The UN Global Compact Network is an initiative for companies who aim to do business responsibly by aligning their strategies and operations with ten principles on human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption, and take strategic actions to advance broader societal goals, such as the UN Sustainable Development Goals, with an emphasis on collaboration and innovation.

During the event, FiTI Validation Coordinator, Dorothea Garff, spoke during the panel “The role of collective action on anti-corruption and transparency in Latin America” alongside Fabian Espejo, Coordinator of Collective Action in the Global UN Compact Network. Mr. Espejo presented the tools offered by the Global Compact Network for initiating collective action against corruption and showcased examples from different countries enhancing integrity through collaborative efforts. Ms Garff introduced the FiTI as a living example of how sustainable fisheries can be improved through participative multi-stakeholder collaboration, which countries establish by implementing the FiTI Standard.

The event was attended by national authorities, representatives of international cooperation and business leaders, such as Pablo Ruiz Hiebra, Local Coordinator of United Nations in Uruguay, Stefan Duppel German Ambassador to Uruguay, Gabriel Cimas, President of Global Compact Network Uruguay, Mariano Berro Gonzalez, Director of the Agency for International Cooperation in Uruguay (AUCI), Barbara Schweiger, Regional Director of German Agency for International Cooperation (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH), Leandro Arreagada Palma, Alliance for Integrity Manager for Latin America, and Felipe Filomeno, Executive Director of Global Compact Network Uruguay.
