FiTI commemorates International Day for Universal Access to Information at ICIC, UNESCO Global Conferences

FREETOWN, September 28-30, 2026. The Fisheries Transparency Initiative (FiTI) participated in the 2026 International Conference of Information Commissioners (ICIC) and the UNESCO Global Conference to commemorate International Day for Universal Access to Information (IDUAI) 2026 in Sierra Leone. This two-in-one event was jointly hosted by the Sierra Leone Right to Access Information Commission (RAIC) and UNESCO, on the theme: “Upholding Information Integrity in the Digital Age: The role of Access to Information in addressing Information Disorder”.

The aim of the conference was to present workable solutions to overcome the challenges of misinformation, disinformation, or fake news which accompany advancement in digital technologies and social media. The gathering facilitated high-level policy dialogue, peer learning and global collaboration to strengthen access to information regimes across jurisdictions.

The FiTI organised and led a panel discussion on improving access to fisheries management information through a multi-stakeholder approach as part of the ICIC-IDUAI conference. The session focused on how FiTI implementing countries can build resilient fisheries management information environments. The discussion aimed to showcase the close relationship between access to information and the mission of the FiTI and to highlight the importance of FiTI work in implementing countries.

FiTI Regional Coordinator for Anglophone Africa, Mr Godfred Ameyaw Asiedu, presented the implementation status of the FiTI in Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Ghana in the West Africa sub-region, followed by panel discussions between members of these countries under the close observation of the Federal Deputy Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information, Republic of Germany.

Implementation of the FiTI through the establishment and operationalisation of National Multi-Stakeholder Groups and Fisheries Information Systems (FIS) for implementing countries were among the key issues discussed in the session. Participants learned why and how government, civil society, and private sector actors engage in the multi-stakeholder FiTI process to improve access to fisheries management information.

Federal Deputy Commissioner Mr Andreas Hartl gave concluding remarks of the session by emphasising the important role of the fisheries sector particularly in developing countries and therefore the need for improved governance of the sector by enhancing transparency and access to fisheries management information.

Mr Hartl mentioned that the German government attaches a lot of importance to FiTI work in implementing countries and will continue to support ongoing efforts at improving transparency in fisheries management. He congratulated the FiTI and implementing countries for the existing collaboration to ensure fish food security in West Africa through transparency and stakeholder participation.

While in Sierra Leone, the FiTI used this opportunity to hold a fisheries multi-stakeholder meeting at the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources (MFMR) in Freetown to discuss next steps of action for the establishment and operationalisation of a FiTI National Multi-Stakeholder Group in Sierra Leone. Amidst a gathering that included representatives from government of Sierra Leone institutions, civil society organisations, and the private sector, the Minister, Deputy Minister, Permanent Secretary and Director of Fisheries and Marine Resources assured their political commitment and support towards the work of the National Multi-Stakeholder Group.

Potential multi-stakeholder group institutions expressed their interest and their willingness to nominate members to represent them on the National Multi-Stakeholder Group. The FiTI will follow up with the next steps to work with the authorities of the MFMR to establish and inaugurate the FiTI National Multi-Stakeholder Group in Sierra Leone to facilitate implementation of the FiTI in Sierra Leone.
