FiTI Promotes transparency & sustainability at 2024 Seychelles Ocean Fair
VICTORIA, 7 & 8 June 2024. The Danny Faure Foundation hosted the second edition of its Ocean Fair at Camion Hall in Seychelles, commemorating the United Nation’s World Ocean Day under the theme ‘Sustainable Oceans.’ The Fisheries Transparency Initiative (FiTI) was grateful to participate in this event, which aimed to elevate public awareness and foster community engagement for the sustainable management of ocean resources.
The Ocean Fair was a unique opportunity to highlight the collective efforts of various governmental institutions and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) towards ocean protection and conservation. The event included informational materials, educational games and expert talks, providing attendees with a comprehensive understanding of various aspects of ocean conservation. The Fair also featured ocean-inspired art and crafts by local artists and artisans, underscoring the deep connection between the Seychellois people and their marine environment.
The FiTI International Secretariat – represented by West Indian Ocean Regional Coordinator Yannick Memee, TAKING STOCK Coordinator Nancy Ng Ping Cheun and Grant Manager Karine Young – presented Seychelles’ 2022 FiTI Report, offering visitors a detailed overview of the nation’s marine resources and the efforts to ensure their sustainable use. This report served as a cornerstone for discussions, providing a transparent look into the challenges and successes in the fisheries sector. Visitors engaged deeply with the content, gaining valuable insights into how transparency can drive better management practices and foster a culture of accountability.
FiTI’s participation also focused on educating visitors about the initiative and its mission to enhance transparency in marine fisheries, and how making fisheries governance information publicly accessible can lead to more informed decision-making and improved management of marine resources. Through an interactive quiz – with questions ranging from basic information related to transparency to intricate details about fisheries governance – participants expanded their knowledge of fisheries and ocean sustainability, sparking lively discussions and a deeper interest in these topics. Visitors who answered at least five questions correctly were also rewarded with exciting prizes. The FiTI’s message resonated strongly with the Fair’s visitors, who recognized transparency’s role in achieving sustainable fisheries and protecting ocean health.
The success of the 2024 Ocean Fair highlights the importance of education, transparency and collective action in achieving a sustainable ocean. For Seychelles, an island nation, the ocean is not just a natural resource but a vital part of its heritage and future. The Fair offers the chance for initiatives like the FiTI to connect with the public and share valuable insights, inspiring a collective commitment to safeguard our precious marine resources and preserve this future.
