Ecuador publishes first FiTI Report in the Americas

QUITO, September 20, 2024. Ecuador, the first country in Latin America to adopt the Fisheries Transparency Initiative (FiTI) Standard, has solidified its position as a regional leader by publishing its first FiTI Report, covering calendar years 2022 and 2023. This achievement reinforces the country’s commitment to transparency and sustainability in fisheries management. The report was prepared by the National Multi-Stakeholder Group (MSG) from FiTI Ecuador with the support of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), USAID, and the Pan American Development Foundation (PADF), within the framework of the ECOS project.

The report was presented at an event in Quito, attended by government authorities, representatives from UNODC, FiTI, the U.S. Embassy, USAID, and PADF, and marked a milestone in advancing responsible fishing through increased transparency in Ecuador’s fisheries sector. In accordance with the 12 information requirements established by the FiTI Standard, the report provides an assessment of fisheries regulations, marine resources, and both industrial and artisanal fishing.

During the event, the Minister of Production, Foreign Trade, Investments, and Fisheries, Sonsoles García, emphasized the significance of this achievement: “This report marks a ‘before and after’ in the transparency of the fisheries sector. Ecuador demonstrates that sustainable fisheries management is possible when there is a real commitment to accountability and the protection of our resources.”

The new report also identifies significant progress in the fight against illegal fishing and highlights the importance of continuing to update data on vessels and catches, both on the mainland and in the Galapagos Islands. The report’s focus is on ensuring clear and understandable access to information to improve decision-making for the benefit of fishing communities and marine ecosystems.

Leopoldo Fernández Herce, Head of UNODC Country Office in Ecuador and the Global Program for Crimes that Affect the Environment Regional Coordinator for Latin America and the Caribbean, stated, “This effort strengthens the economic and environmental sustainability of the country, contributing to the security and well-being of the region.”

“This is a clear demonstration to the country’s commitment and leadership in adopting international transparency standards. We hope this report serves as an inspiration for other countries in the region to follow this path towards greater sustainability and stronger governance in their fisheries,” highlighted Nicolás Rovegno, Regional Coordinator for Latin America for FiTI.

With the publication of this report, Ecuador positions itself as a leader in fisheries transparency and as a regional reference for other countries seeking to improve the management of their marine resources. in doing so, the country reaffirms its commitment to sustainable development and the preservation of its valuable fisheries resources for future generations.
