High-level webinar with the Permanent Commission for the South Pacific (CPPS)
On 14 October 2020 we conducted a high-level webinar on “Fisheries in the time of COVID-19: Challenges and perspectives for sustainable fisheries in South America”, in collaboration with the Permanent Commission for the South Pacific (CPPS).
The CPPS is the maritime organization that coordinates regional maritime policies in order to adopt concerted positions of its Member States (Chile, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru).
The purpose of this event was, in addition to raise the FiTI’s profile within the region, to address the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the economic crisis on the fisheries sector in the region.
The discussions clearly showed that in an era where our global ocean systems are already exposed to threats such as climate change, pollution and overfishing – and these threats are now further aggravated by the global pandemic – stakeholder collaboration and transparency are crucial practices to address these challenges collectively. Maintaining sustainable fisheries management is no exception.
The webinar provided an opportunity for the regional and international panellist to analyse the challenges and opportunities for their recovery, with a focus on strengthening participation and transparency in fisheries management.
Over 210 people from all over the region participated in the event.
