FiTI invited to speak at Committee on Fisheries of the European Parliament
BRUSSELS – 21 June 2017. Following the proposal of MEP Ms Linnéa Engström (Greens group coordinator), the Committee on Fisheries of the European Parliament has decided to invite the FiTI International Secretariat to hold an exchange of views on the FiTI on Wednesday, 21 June 18.00-18.30 in Brussels.
Furthermore, the FiTI International Secretariat has also been invited to speak at a breakfast meeting, co-organised by Mrs Julie Girling MEP and Ms Linnéa Engström MEP, entitled “Transparency. A vital tool in the fight for ethical fishing”. This event is scheduled to take place from 08:00-09:00 on Thursday 22nd June, in room ASP 1H1 in the European Parliament.
“This event seeks to bring together various stakeholders from across the fisheries sector to discuss the ways in which the current lack of transparency can be addressed. The recent adoption of the International Standard to promote the open and accountable management of marine fisheries resources at the 2nd International Conference of the Fisheries Transparency Initiative (FiTI) serves as a strong example to the rest of the world that collaboration on this issue is possible. Indeed, transparency is not a challenge that can be met by a single actor or stakeholder meaning that a collective effort is imperative if meaningful change is to occur.”
